Interview with Joe Shaffner, November 4, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Joe Shaffner served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan in 2005 and Suriname from 2005 to 2008. Joe wanted to join the Peace Corps after hearing about his father’s and brother’s experiences as volunteers. In Uzbekistan, he served as a Health Education volunteer. However, civil unrest arose during his first six weeks following training, and the groups’ visas were not renewed. He was evacuated and given the opportunity to go to another country. In Suriname, Joe’s counterpart ran an ecotourism camp. Joe worked with his community to add a souvenir shop, so that the village women could sell their goods in a central location. He also held health and business education camps and taught English. Joe served as a Peace Corps leader in his last year, when he was given the nickname “Half Staff.” He ran the newsletter and worked on an education project with UNICEF.Interview Accession
