Interview Summary
Born into a prominent ?Old Philadelphia? family, Idelle Truitt Elsey (1892-1985) worked at the Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital and at the Brown and Stevens Bank before serving as secretary to the executive director of the Armstrong Association of Philadelphia from 1927 to 1962. There, she helped find work and housing for Black newcomers from the South. In this 1984 interview, Elsey spoke about her family, her own life, and her memories of Black Philadelphia in the early 1900s.Interview Accession
