Enlistment in the Army in 1957; basic training at Fort Benning-- Georgia; airborne training at Fort Bragg; assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division; confusion identifying the enemy in Vietnam; arrival in Vietnam in June 1965; Special Forces (Green Beret) training at Fort Bragg in 1964; duty as a rural reconstruction advisor in Vietnam; duty with the Thirtieth Ranger Battalion near the Cambodian border; combat experiences while on patrol; American strategy; being wounded; assignment to Saigon as assistant operations officer for the 716th M.P. Battalion; commanding Company B of the 716th M.P. Battalion; R&R in Bangkok; bombings in Saigon; "survivor guilt"; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; his opinion of the American soldier in Vietnam; duty as an M.P. in New York City; Vietnam compared to the American Civil War.
