Rufus Shepherd describes his life in the mountains when he was young. He refers to the practices of a number of local churches and characterizes weddings and funerals. Shepherd recalls the first cars in the area having to be driven up creek beds after rocks had been thrown in the holes. He describes the work of the local blacksmith and tells how the miller captured water from the creek to turn his wheel. Shepherd also relates that during the Depression some families had nothing but what they could borrow from neighbors. He tells of being bitten by copperheads twice and explains the remedy his family used.
