Interview Summary
Ralph J. Devine served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II. In this interview he discusses his experiences as one of the soldiers who liberated the concentration camp Dachau. He describes breaking down the gate with tanks, watching prisoners attack and kill German guards, and his experiences searching the furnaces and railroad cars containing bodies of prisoners. He talks about the feelings and nightmares these experiences caused for him. He talks about his experiences in Munich where he was told several American soldiers were killed by German soldiers after going home with German women.Interview Accession
