Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Judy Marcouiller served as a Peace Corps volunteer with education programs in Liberia (1977-1979) and in Botswana (1982-1984). Following an undergraduate degree in home economics, she applied to the Peace Corps and was offered a position teaching in Liberia. She trained at Cuttington University in Liberia, with a cohort of approximately 50 volunteers, all of whom were in education. Her placement was with a residential teacher training college (ZRTTI) near Zorzor where she taught home economics. She became ill while there and had to be medevaced to Washington but returned to complete her two years. Following her return to the U.S., she again applied to the Peace Corps, was accepted to Botswana, and spent two years teaching home economics at a junior secondary school in Kanye, several hours outside the capital, Gaborone. She worked for five years as a Peace Corps recruitment manage, after which she served as Administrative Officer for Peace Corps in Sierra Leone (1990-1993) and Swaziland (1993-1995). She also served as Acting Director and Director in those countries. Following additional short term staff assignments with the Peace Corps, and a Masters in Public Administration, she served for twelve years as a Foreign Service HR specialist, where both her administrative and cross-cultural skills stood her in good stead.Interview Accession
