Interview Summary
Tom Fitzgerald talks about his involvement in Appalachian Kentucky, including social issues, failure of a Congressional bill against strip mining, political changes in the Council of the Southern Mountains, and the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund. He discusses the passage of the 1977 Surface Mining Act, limitations of the Act, and the effect of the Act on citizen activism. He talks about the Kentucky Rivers Coalition, the creation of the Kentucky Resources Council, legal challenges to broad form deeds, and state water well drilling codification. He talks about a lawsuit against Kentucky for non-enforcement of the Surface Mining Act. He discusses hazardous waste dumping and uncontrolled timber cutting in Kentucky.Interview Accession
