Interview with Thomas Forbes, October 24, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Tom Forbes Dominican Republic, 1987-1989, Appropriate Technology/Water. Tom Forbes was born in central Illinois, Bloomington. He went to a Bloomington Central Catholic High School and then Illinois State University. He graduated with a BA in criminal justice and a MA in political science. Tom was interested in the Peace Corps because of its reputation, his interest in learning Spanish, and desire to live outside the US. Tom was requested by the community of Los Naranjos de Castillo to bring water and light to the community. While grappling with local issues, Tom participated in a workshop on solar electricity and saw the benefits of creating a business model with two brothers, one his original counterpart of Los Naranjos in implementing the project. He also participated in the use of ceramic stoves. Tom noted that the Peace Corps structure and oversight provided minimal support for Volunteers. He also felt that the Peace Corps was more of an exchange program than a development organization and continues today. Tom met and eventually married a Dominican woman visiting the D.R. but living in the Washington Heights, NYC. Returning to the U.S. he worked in the social services arena and teaching high school social studies in NYC.
