Interview Summary

Master Sergeant Bernell S. Heaton served as a waist gunner in the 303rd Bomb Group. He flew fifteen missions, and describes raids on Bremen and Gelsenkirchen, Germany. On his fifteenth mission, his plane was shot down. Wounded, he bailed out and was discovered by German farmers, who took him to an S.S. camp. After a brief interrogation, Heaton was transferred to the Stalag 17 P.O.W. camp. He discusses his life in Stalag 17, his attempt to escape, and his eventual evacuation.
