Interview Summary

Del McCoury talks about his early interest in music, including a story about seeing Bill Monroe play at a drive-in theater as a child. He talks about learning to play the banjo and beginning to play with Keith Daniels & the Blue Ridge Ramblers. He talks about being hired by Bill Monroe to play guitar in his band, some of the bands he played with after leaving Bill Monroe, and beginning his own band, The Del McCoury Band. He discusses in detail records he has recorded, gigs and shows he has played, and the various musicians who have been members of his bands over the years, including his sons Rob and Ronnie. He talks about beginning his own record label, McCoury Music, and his own music festival, DelFest.
