Interview with Jimmy Dale Sanders, February 23, 2007
Project: Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment Oral History Project
Interview Summary
This interview with Pike County (Ky.) Solid Waste Coordinator Jimmy Dale Sanders begins with a discussion of the ways in which the environment has changed since he was a boy in the 1950s. He then talks about the problem of illegal dumping and littering in the county. Sanders then describes how Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE) grants helped the county to clean up polluted areas. Next, Sanders discusses the metal and tire recycling programs available in Pike County (Ky.). He further talks about cleaning up the county, and describes at great length Pike County (Ky.)'s issues with funding such programs. He also talks about the county's recycling and septic system programs. Sanders then moves on to talk about James Bickford and Hal Rogers' role in creating Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment (PRIDE) and his work with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Next, Sanders talks about the issue of water quality in Pike County (Ky.), which is made worse by coal mining in the county. He uses this topic as a springboard to discuss coal mining's effects on the environment in general, and then talks about his work with judges and the county's fiscal court. Finally, Sanders talks about his own experience as a coal miner, and ends the interview by lamenting that our society has become wasteful.Interview Accession
