Interview Summary

This interview with retired engineer A.K. Mathur begins with a discussion of his background, including biographical information and his education. He then talks about his father's relationship to Aligarh Muslim University. He then talks about his experiences at the university, with a brief discussion on studying foreign languages. Mathur then goes on to talk about the effects that the partition of India had on Aligarh Muslim University. He also talks about his ancestry, which includes descendants from a Divan of the Mogul Empire. Next, Mathur talks in general about violence between Muslims and Hindus during the time of partition, as well as the Communal riots that occurred frequently at the time of partition. He also talks about his experience as a Hindu at a majority Muslim university. Mathur then goes on to discuss the girls and women who attended classes at Aligarh Muslim University. Mathur and his wife talk about the establishment of Pakistan and their colleagues and family who migrated to the newly-created country. After briefly discussing sports at Aligarh Muslim University, the interview ends with a discussion about the convocation ceremonies at the university, and finally the interviewer and Mathur talk about his upcoming trip to the United States.
