Interview Summary

Jacinda Townsend Gilder talks about her experience as an African American writer from Bowling Green, Kentucky. She discusses her book, "Saint Monkey," and the inspiration behind it. She discusses how the concepts of otherness, rememory, homeplace, and lineage appear in her writings. She also mentions her experiences with visiting Mauritania, Morocco, and Côte d'Ivoire as well as traveling from California to Kentucky. She talks about how her travels affected her sense of identity and concept of place. Finally, she discusses her experience in the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, talks about what it means to be a Black Kentuckian, and gives writing advice.
