Interview Summary
In this interview, Susan Schmidt Horning talks to audio engineer and music producer John Palladino. He begins by describing how he learned audio engineering at Los Angeles City College and then talks about his time in the armed forces during World War II. After the war, Palladino began his career at Radio Recorders in Los Angeles, and also delves into the topic of the other recording studios in Los Angeles in the 1950s. He explores the audio recording equipment available at the time and then talks about the issue of crediting audio engineers and music producers on albums.Palladino then discusses his move to Capitol Records and talks about the technology available to him there, such as multi-tracking. He discusses Capitol Records' move to the Capitol Records Tower in 1956 and the changes in technology that occurred at the time, including a move to stereophonic recording. Finally, Palladino talks his move to the A&R department and about the change that rock music brought to the recording business.
