Interview Summary

Varney talks about working in the Mountain Arts Center and the craft industry in and around Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Varney offers up issues and possible solutions for the craft industry in the region. The first being the lack of business or marketing education that the artisans have. Varney attempts to amend this by offering free business workshops at the Mountain Arts Center. The other and much harder issue to solve is the appreciation or lack thereof of art in that area. According to Varney, it must begin within the school systems early in people's lives, showing them that art is of value. Finally, Varney talks about mountaintop removal and the relationships the coal companies have with art initiatives such as The Mountain Arts Center.
