Interview Summary

Mr. Travis grew up in Wayne County, Kentucky, graduating from the Lincoln Institute and Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio. He recalls African American involvement in Lexington politics beginning in the 1940s. Also mentioned is the formation of the Citizens for Good Government organization; the presence of African American political candidates and white support for them; the relationships between African American officials and city hall; African American voters; and his 1964 race for the state legislature.
