Interview with Katherine "Katie" Knips Ladas, August 2, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Katherine “Katie” Knips Ladas served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1991 through 1993 in the Community Economic Development Program. Katie had volunteered in the U.S. and had an interest in other cultures. A short-term experience in Guatemala with Global Volunteers spurred interest in longer term volunteer service. Katie was mid-career when she applied to Peace Corps, working corporate and wanting to transition into nonprofit. Her group trained in Santo Domingo. She thinks the training did a good job of providing practical and personal tools, and set realistic expectations. Katie’s assignment was in Los Dajaos, near Jarabacoa. She worked with women’s groups in surrounding communities to develop cottage industries. She led a project to construct latrines and educated the community on the importance of sanitation. This led to bringing the men’s and women’s groups together to start farming strawberries and making strawberry products to sell to tourists. The Peace Corps helped Katie gain the experience she needed to successfully transition to nonprofit work. Katie continues to use the life lessons and perspectives she learned in the Peace Corps, sharing these learning with others throughout her work and life.
