Interview Summary

Wolfe discusses her family's long history in Clay County, Kentucky. She describes her experiences growing up with her extended family in the area. She explains the various games and activities that she played as a child. She discusses the sharing of land and goods among the family members. She remembers picking up milk from her uncle and gathering with the family at harvest times. She remembers the wide variety of crops her parents and family members would grow. Wolfe recalls her memories during World War II. She describes the various stores and businesses within Manchester. Wolfe recalls her years in elementary and high school. She discusses her family's economic status during her childhood. Wolfe discusses the effort of teachers at the high school she taught at to create a nature trail and wetlands. She connects her deep appreciation of nature to her early childhood spent in the woods. She talks about the stereotypes her students encounter being from rural Kentucky, and says she hopes that an appreciation for Kentucky will provide them with a sense of pride in themselves and their community.
