Interview with Rita Murphy, January 2, 2024

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Rita Murphy served in the Dominican Republic, 1982-1984, in community economic development. Her permanent site was Canoa. Originally, she was assigned to nutrition, but ended up collaborating with several women's groups (on her motorcycle) with help from the Institute for Development of the Southwest. These groups worked on sewing projects, for which Rita wrote grants, making items from banana leaves for sale, young peoples’ artisan projects, facilitating mothers’ communication and education, and selling semi-precious stones. Rita says she went abroad with the idea she would fend for herself but learned that she could help support the local economy by paying for locals to cook and clean for her. Rita describes Dominicans as happy people who love dancing. Rita said PC spreads good feelings, that RPCVs contribute to society and that PC fosters interpersonal relationships.
