Interview Summary

This is an interview with Bruce Gigax, recording engineer and owner of Audio Recording Studio in Cleveland, Ohio. The interview begins with a discussion of the history of recording in Cleveland and at Audio Recording. He talks about the founder, Vlad Maleckar, who originally focused on recording polka music.

This interview then moves on to discuss Terry Knight, music producer for Grand Funk Railroad, who utilized Audio Recording for recording the band. From there, Gigax discusses the buildings that housed Audio Recording and talks about the clientele that used the studio. The interview then becomes more personal, focusing on Gigax's involvement with Audio Recording. From there, he traces the history of the recording studio and talks about the early technology that was available when the studio was founded.

Gigax also discusses the more technical side of recording, focusing on recording technology and the changes that occurred with the advent of multi-track recording. Gigax talks about samplers, emulators, and recording consoles, as well as various recorders. The interview ends with a discussion regarding the difficulties in researching the history of sound recording, and an examination of audio engineers as creative entities.
