Interview Summary

Steve Kramer, a union organizer from New York, talks about his involvement with poverty programs in Appalachia during the War on Poverty in the 1960s. In this interview he discusses how he became involved with community action and how groups like the Appalachian Volunteers and the VISTA workers helped the people of Raleigh County take over their own poverty program from the original board of directors. He discusses how different groups in the community felt towards the outside volunteers and community action in general. He discusses the possibility of successful reform movements today and in the future. He talks about his career in union organizing.
