Interview with Alice Rose McLain White, March 13, 2014

Project: McLain Family Band Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Alice discusses her life as a member of the McLain Family Band, her first memories of performing, reunion concerts, festivals, and her siblings as musicians. She also discusses her early childhood in Hindman, moving to Berea, and the many lessons her parents taught. She also talks about meeting Al White, performing outside the family band, and moving to New Mexico in 1978 which prompted her leaving the band.

This near three hour interview took place in Berea, Kentucky at the home of Rev. Kent Gilbert, a longtime family friend of the McLains and the minister at Union Church in Berea. Russ Farmer (a semi-retired documentary producer from Lexington) videoed the interview. He, along with Paul O. Jenkins with whom Dr. Hoffman is in writing collaboration about The McLains, were each invited to submit questions and topics covered in this interview. IMPORTANT NOTE: This interview was conducted on March 13, but at two points is incorrectly attributed to March 12.
