Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Ron tells of his decision to apply to the Peace Corps and to accept an invitation to serve as a PCV in Ethiopia. He recalls his training in Los Angeles and arrival in Ethiopia. He describes Arusi province, where he lived, including its geography, climate, and demographics. There in Asella at Ras Darge Secondary School he taught History, Math, and Physics. He relates the challenges and satisfactions of teaching and getting to know students and colleagues. He tells of other projects he participated in, including a Food for Peace program. He describes his housing and unexpected experiences managing a houseboy and a compound guard. He recalls his leisure activities, which included visiting the Rift Valley, backpacking, and travel in Ethiopia and the Middle East. He reflects on what he learned in the Peace Corps, its value in his career, and how well the Peace Corps has achieved its three goals.
