Interview Summary

Susan "Sue" Lotz talks about her childhood in Denver, Colorado and the family environment she grew up in. She talks about her decision to attend Catholic University in Washington, D.C., her initial major in engineering, and why she chose education as her ultimate major. Lotz talks about her difficulty adjusting to living so far from home when she first arrived at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She talks about how she eventually began to acclimate, made friends, and enjoyed her college environment. Lotz talks about her early experiences volunteering in high school and college. Lotz talks about the process she went through in deciding to volunteer with the Christian Appalachian Project over other organizations. She talks about her adjustment to life at CAP, including communal living and meeting many new people. Lotz talks about her first project with Christian Appalachian Project: the School on Wheels GED program in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Lotz talks about her second project at Christian Appalachian Project: the elderly visitation program. She talks about how this program does not address financial poverty, but instead poverty of spirit. Lotz talks about her decision to leave Christian Appalachian Project and how she knew it was time to move on.
