Interview Summary

In this interview, Corporal Rufus W. Smith, who served as a machine gunner with the 4th Marine Infantry Regiment (part of the Philippine Defense Association), describes the Palawan Massacre. He talks about watching American airplanes fly over the area, moving into the trenches, and escaping from trench. Smith talks about the brutality of the Japanese soldiers, hiding and evading the Japanese, swimming across the bay, and fighting off a shark. He also describes his experiences at a penal colony and being rescued by the "inmates."
