Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Stephan Malinowski served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Eastern Caribbean, from 1974 through 1977, in the Education Program. Steve applied to Peace Corps at the suggestion of a supervisor at New York University, after beginning his teaching career. His training cohort, EC15, trained on the island of Barbados. He was assigned to Hillsborough Junior Secondary School on the island of Carriacao, Grenada, where he taught English and Reading to remedial students. Faced with a shortage of teaching resources, Steve developed his own. He was able to obtain a donation of several thousand books, and raised funds to build a library. Steve married a fellow volunteer who was assigned to the same school. He extended for a third year in order to complete setting up the library. After Peace Corps, he earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He continued to be involved in volunteer work, serving others. The interview discusses Steve’s experiences during service, contributions to his community, and the impact of Peace Corps on his life.Interview Accession
