Interview Summary
Richard Thomas describes his time both leading up to and working with PRIDE. Through narrating his personal history and his work in the army, Thomas details his motivation for working with PRIDE, as well as how his time with them began after working for the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet under James Bickford. He describes the formation of PRIDE as a partnership between Secretary Bickford and Congressman Hal Rogers, and he details their focus at the inception of PRIDE, as well as how that has evolved into what PRIDE is focusing on achieving now.Thomas discusses the importance of environmental education and cleaning up Southern and Eastern Kentucky, both for the good of the land as well as those who live on it. He describes several initiatives and other organizations that have been working to achieve similar goals in the region, all doing so in order to revitalize Southern and Eastern Kentucky as a whole. Thomas concludes the interview by discussing the future goals of PRIDE, focusing on childhood environmental education.
