Interview with John J. Dolan, August 18, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
John Dolan served as a Peace Corps Volunteer with Brazil 1, from 1962 through 1964, in the Agriculture Program. John studied Animal Husbandry at Delaware Valley University in Pennsylvania, and worked on ranches in Nebraska. He was drafted into the Army and served part of his tour in France. He became interested in international work, and applied to both Heifer Project International and Peace Corps. John notes that while training in Washington DC, he witnessed a lot of bi-partisan support for Peace Corps. Training was also conducted in Puerto Rico and Brazil. Training included survival skills, as well as Portuguese language, and tropical agriculture. John was assigned to Boa Parada, Santa Catarina, with the Brazil Agriculture Extension Service (ABCAR). In his second year, John moved to Vitoria, Espirito Santo, and served as a Volunteer Leader. He traveled extensively throughout the region as part of his job. He also traveled to Peru, through the Andes, and as far as Mexico City. John worked with another PCV, Priscilla Thorsrud, in Boa Parada, and they married after returning home. They remain close to others from their group, and have attended reunions in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Brazil.Interview Accession
