Interview Summary
Twiley W. Barker was an African American scientist and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at University of Illinois at Chicago. Barker speaks about growing up in Louisiana, his service in the US Air Force, and attending Southern University for his BA degree and the University of Illinois, Urbana for graduate school where he completed his PhD in political science in 1955. He talks about working as a research associate for the Illinois Legislative Council, teaching at Southern University and being a founding faculty member in the political science department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Barker also discusses political science as a discipline, his involvement in associations, successful journals, and the difficulty he finds in recruiting political science graduate students.Interview Accession
