Project: Student Projects: West Chester University Student Peer to Peer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Current US Marine, father of three, and upcoming West Chester University graduate. Currently living outside of Lancaster, PA, Andrew has served in the Marine Corp for almost 16 years and has worked at Avon Grove High School as a security contractor. He plans on graduating from West Chester University, this spring 2022. After graduation, he plans on becoming a high school Social studies teacher and creating a class that emulates the Vietnam Oral History class except with a goal of interviewing individuals involved with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ultimately, he hopes to become a college professor. This interview will largely focus on Andrew’s service in the War in Iraq. As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have wound down, the importance of recording the experiences of these veterans has greatly increased. The war in Iraq is still something that is discussed in popular culture and academic circles and the implications of the war will be discussed in future years. In his biography he differentiated his service in Iraq to his other service, implying importance. Specifically, he focused on his time in Ramadi, a city in central Iraq and the PTT (Police Transition Training) he completed while there. Additionally, he describes the actions of insurgents and his actions to stop them. Throughout the interview he highlights moments he refers to as “humanizing” and emphasizes these stories in his narrative. Anecdotes about fallen American soldiers, Iraqi citizens thanking him, and the birthday party of a fellow solider.
