Interview Summary
A. B. Happy Chandler, born in Corydon, KY, was the second commissioner of Major League baseball, from 1945 to 1951. In 1982, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In this interview, he talks about Leo Durocher's hearing, the antagonism between Branch Rickey and Larry MacPhail, some of the allegations against Larry MacPhail related to gambling, Chandler's decision to suspend Durocher, the threat he feels gambling poses to baseball, his relationship with Babe Ruth, including his visiting him in the hospital, Babe Ruth Day, Ruth's funeral, George Zoeterman and the high school signing rule, Bill Veeck, the television contract for the 1947 World Series, Chandler's decision to sell it to NBC, and the 1948 World Series.Interview Accession
