Interview Summary

Harold Franklin Cottrell was born in Munfordville, Kentucky, on December 6, 1949, the son of a farming family, Stanley W. Cottrell and Ida Belle Sharpe Cottrell. Harold attended school in Munfordville and graduated from Munfordville High School in 1967. He enrolled at the University of Kentucky in the fall of 1967 but left in 1969 before completing his degree. To avoid the Draft, he hitchhiked to New York City where he found employment for two years. He returned to Kentucky and enrolled at Elizabethtown Community College during the 1971-1972 academic year. In 1972 he married Rebecca Ray and they divorced in 1981. He enrolled at Armstrong State College in Savannah, Georgia in 1975 and graduate with a degree in Mathematics in 1977. He returned to Kentucky and earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics in 1979. In this interview he discusses his Sharpe Family history, his father, and his childhood.
