Interview Summary
In this interview with General Wajahat Hussain, Hussain begins by talking about the Aligarh Exhibition, which showcased various trades and goods in the city of Aligarh (India). He then talks about the women and girls who attended Aligarh Muslim University and Aligarh Girls College, and discusses the practice of purdah, the religious and social practice of female seclusion prevalent among some Muslim and Hindu communities in South Asia. Next, Hussain talks about the Hindus that attended Aligarh Muslim University, as well as the communal violence that broke out in the city of Aligarh (India) during the Partition of India in 1947. Hussain discusses his family?s involvement in the Pakistan movement. He then talks about the professors who stayed behind in India due to their affiliation with Aligarh Muslim University. Hussain talks about the ultimate cause of the failure of the Punjab Boundary Force. Next, he talks about the difficult conditions faced by Muslim refugees to Pakistan, which was made worse by flooding in the region. Hussain also talks about Brigadier General R.C.B. Bristow, who wrote "Memories of the British Raj: A Soldier in India." Finally, Hussain discusses the present atmosphere at Aligarh Muslim University, which includes positive relationships between professors and students. He also talks about professors who went to East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) in 1947.Interview Accession
