Interview with Howard "Howie" Schneider, November 3, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Howie Schneider served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia from 1966 through 1968, in the Community Development program. Howie entered Peace Corps through the Advanced Placement Training program, that began training PCVs while still in college. Training was conducted at Notre Dame University. Howie was initially assigned to Cochabamba, to assist the Director of the Regional Community Development Office. There he worked with prisoners in the local jail, and taught English at the Centro Boliviano Americano. In his second year he moved to nearby Sacaba. There he worked with town leaders and Alliance for Progress. He was able to obtain grants from a Rotary Club in North Carolina to fund many community improvement projects. Howie enjoyed being able to work independently, and establish his own priorities. Upon return home, he entered graduate school at Columbia University, focusing on Latin American Studies and Anthropology. Howie is now retired from 25 years as a social worker with people with developmental disabilities and their families. Howie believes that his Peace Corps experience and knowledge of Spanish language were advantageous throughout his career. He continues to do volunteer work, assisting Spanish speaking asylum seekers.Interview Accession
