Interview Summary
A 1933 graduate of Fisk University, Mr. Childress comments upon the African American religious community and the alterations he has witnessed such as the lack of younger members, "Reagan-omics" and it's influence upon the congregational makeup, and the lack of loyalty to the African american church brought on by economic security. Mr. Warford remarks upon the ongoing leadership role of ministers within the African American church and society. He recalls the Howard Congregational Church in Nashville, Tennessee, the influence of J.C. Napier, registrar of the Treasury Department under William Howard Taft and founder of the oldest African American bank in Nashville, and Preston and John Burris.Interview Accession
