Interview Summary

Herman Fred Vetter, Jr. was born on July 13, 1942 in Savannah, Georgia, the son of Herman Fred Vetter, Sr. and Elizabeth Margaret Bailey. His father was a bookkeeper and food distributor, and his mother was a home demonstration economist and lighting expert. Fred attended Charles Ellis Elementary School and graduated from Savannah High School in 1959. He enrolled at Davidson College in the fall of 1959 and after attending Armstrong University for a semester, he transferred to Florida State University and graduated with Honors in 1963 with a B.A. in English Literature. He was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship in 1964 and earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and Public Administration from FSU in 1967. He was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 1967 at the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan before being hired by the University of Kentucky in the Department of Political Science. He left U.K. in 1971 and began a career in public service and private enterprise. In this interview he discusses the Cold War, the Draft, and his experiences at the University of Michigan Survey Research Center.
