Interview Summary

Mary Younger served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon from 1974 to 1976, entering Peace Corps after her graduation from college with a degree in French. She was stationed in a mid-sized town, Ebolowa, in the wet tropical zone of south-central Cameroon, serving as a middle school English teacher. Younger was impressed both by the respect offered to schoolteachers by students and community members, as well as the generosity of her colleagues and friends. During her service she had a few opportunities to visit wildlife reserves and appreciate the remarkable cultural diversity across Cameroon. Upon returning to the United States, she became a vocal ambassador for Peace Corps across the state of Montana. Younger established the Western Montana Returned Peace Corps Volunteer group, which supports current and recently returned volunteers.
