Interview Summary

Norma Hannigan came from a military family. She graduated from Hunter College with a degree in nursing. Hannigan participated in a CAST assessment (viewed as simulating ambiguity to assess flexibility) before being accepted to work in Chile in Health Education. She and her husband, Terry, were trained in Costa Rica at the Centro de Potencial Humano (Center for Human Potential) on the general culture of Latin America, then on specific Chilean culture upon arrival. Hannigan worked in the hospital in Marchigue, 6th Region, on a Chagas disease campaign and developed a first aid course for public health workers. She also worked with the local parish priest who introduced her to families in need of services. Hannigan also assisted in collecting books from various sources to develop a library in the town.
