Interview with Danyl "Dan" Cook, December 11, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Danyl "Dan" Cook served in the Dominican Republic, 1991-1993, assisting small businesses. Despite bouts of loneliness and amoebic parasites, Dan recalls fondly many “wow” moments. Permanent site was La Pascuala. PC told Dan to work with a woman's group making soap. However, nobody knew how to make soap! He found other things to do, including, teaching his women’s group to make jewelry out of fish scales, helped by a volunteer from Japan; and, with other business PCVs, putting on workshops for PCVs and their community leaders on how to start a business. Dan’s most memorable experience was when he discovered he was able to communicate in Spanish with native Dominicans. Upon re-entry to the US, Dan became a PC recruiter. He feels fortunate he was able to live as many other world citizens do—it made him braver and sensitive to the fact that all people want the same things.
