Interview Summary

Stephen Callahan was a Peace Corps Volunteer from 1980-1982 working as a small business development volunteer with the Central Bank of the Philippines. Subsequently, he worked a number of jobs for the Peace Corps from 1982-1986 and is currently on an expert appointment providing HR and management expertise at Peace Corps headquarters. Sargent Shriver calling his father when Callahan was a boy initially spawned his idea of joining Peace Corps. At 29, after selling his business, he went to the Philippines after the Honduras program closed. He had a two-week intensive training in banking and a 2-month training in Tagalog. He lived with a family in the small town of Santo Tomas, Batangas, where he was treated like family. He traveled a great deal in his job and on vacation, and wrestled with gastroenteritis and a severed Achilles tendon while there. He returned after his mother’s death at the end of service. Peace Corps changed the direction of his life, and, like many others, he felt like he got much more out of it than he was able to give.
