Interview with Beret Vukson Sheary, October 30, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Beret Vukson Sheary served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala from 1998 through 2000, in the Healthy Schools Program. Beret’s immigrant grandparents had a strong influence on her interest in other cultures and places. She learned of Peace Corps when an RPCV visited her high school Spanish class, and immediately knew she wanted to join. She saw Peace Corps service as a way of giving back for the good fortune her grandparents had in coming to America. Beret applied after completing college, but postponed entry to gain some nursing experience. Her training was in Antigua, Guatemala, where she had a very positive experience with her host family. Training included Spanish language, culture, and job skills. Beret was assigned to Momostenango, to work with four schools. Work included health and hygiene education, and related projects such as wood stoves, latrines, and a septic system. Beret discusses her living conditions; work; connections to fellow PCVs and locals; thoughts on Peace Corps service; and its impact on her life.
