Interview Summary

Regina Harrison (known as Regina Macdonald during her Peace Corps years) served as a Volunteer in Ecuador from 1967 to 1970 in the Community Development Program. Language and culture training was conducted in Bozeman, Montana. She and her husband had an initial assignment in the small town of Oña, Ecuador where Harrison taught, and they formed a sheep co-op. Within a year, Peace Corps gave them an opportunity to be the first Volunteers assigned to the Galápagos Islands. Their project there was an attempt to form a fishing co-op on San Cristóbal Island, which met resistance from shopkeepers. They then moved to Santa Cruz Island to build a school and organize school projects. Harrison has returned to Ecuador and Galápagos numerous times for academic research and as director of an undergraduate study abroad program. The interview discusses Harrison’s experience in Peace Corps, as well as her university career in Andean literature and anthropology.
