Interview Summary
Helen Kott served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in India from 1970 to 1972. Helen was finishing graduate school when she applied for the Peace Corps. She left her small Texas town and started training in San Diego and was in one of the first groups to train in country. Helen taught English as a Second Language to future primary school teachers at Saint Theresa’s Basic Training School. She also taught English to boys in the fifth grade throughout her service and held demonstration classes for volunteers in smaller towns. The school followed Ghandhian principles. Peace Corps found her apartment and gave her a bicycle and a fan. Her apartment was small, but had a large veranda from which she could see holiday gatherings at a nearby temple. A family with five children lived downstairs and they were frequent visitors.Interview Accession
