Interview Summary
Alberto Rodriguez-Liriano was an academic at the Instituto Superior de Agricultura (ISA) teaching forest management, ecology, and natural resources. He had had Peace Corps Volunteers as teachers as well as being a Spanish tutor for Volunteers before being employed by the Peace Corps as an Associate Director for the environment sector. His many accomplishments in project evolution included: agroforestry, appropriate technology, small aqueducts, cooking stoves, environment education, eco-tourism, environment for youth, environment leadership development, and income generation through renewable energy. Alberto's perspective on the ideal Volunteer includes: passion for the work, cultural sensitivity, friendships, truthfulness, respectful, not being judgmental, and accepting challenges. He promoted asset-based language which erased frustration and increased challenges and opportunities for service. Alberto also observed various forms of discrimination, including directed at Volunteers of color, younger Volunteers, and female Volunteers. He discussed these issues with host organizations. Alberto had a satisfying career as a pioneer in the environment sector.Interview Accession
