Interview with Rosa Garza Moore, February 6, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Rosa Garza Moore served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic, from 2004 through 2007, in the Community Economic Development Sector. Rosa was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the U.S. at age 6. She studied Anthropology and Spanish language in college. After graduation, she worked with non-profits in D.C., where she met many RPCVs. Their stories spawned her interest in Peace Corps. Her training was conducted in Santo Domingo, and Moca. Training included Spanish language, cultural immersion, taught volunteers to conduct community assessments, and how to conduct workshops. She was assigned to Bayahibe, and lived in nearby Padre Nuestro. Rosa worked with local artisans to create a more formal business structure to tap into the tourist market. Partnering with a representative from the Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral (IDDI), she helped form a Chamber of Commerce, and initiate an annual artisans festival. Secondary projects included summer camps, environmental awareness workshops, and reproductive health classes. Rosa discusses her work, and close relationships formed with members of her community.Interview Accession
