Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Kevin Gaudette served in Sierra Leone, 1968-1970. There were 100 in his group. The first year of his service was spent teaching English, New Math and Discovery Science in a Roman Catholic primary school. The second year he served as Mende Language Program Coordinator for incoming volunteers, and was a Chiefdom Development Agricultural Agent, promoting the cultivation of rice paddy fields. Initial training was at Njala University in Freetown. Volunteers were exposed to Sierra Leone culture. Additional training took place in provincial centers. Kevin was in Bo. He lived in Bo Primary School, studying the Mende language and receiving Teacher Training. To Kevin, the sound of spoken Mende is joyous and musical. Kevin joined PC because he was curious and wanted new experiences. He became well-integrated, and therefore respected, in the communities he lived in. He calls PC service a profound experience, and says he lives a PC 3rd Goal lifestyle.
