Interview with Dan Hatch, August 6, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Dan Hatch served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fijian Islands with his wife Sue from 01/01/1968 to 12/31/1969. Spending time as a child working on his Grandfather’s farm, Dan assisted the local farmers on the Island of Moala, while his wife taught at the school. Working with his counterpart, Ratu Jone, Dan was able to travel to all corners of the island, to learn with and through the host country nationals about coconut cultivation. With the wonderful news of a pregnancy, and blessings of the Peace Corps Medical Office, Sue and Dan had to relocate in their second year. Now an hour outside of Suva, Dan worked with Indian farmers to understand a different perspective of the island business. Dan recalls tales of bringing the moon landing to the people of Fiji via his radio and actual seeing the space craft return. Dan learned from the Fijian to “become one with them” and to move through life “more gently.” Dan keeps close ties to Fiji and will always be at home in the South Pacific.
