Interview Summary

Robert Holcomb "Bob" Knott, Peace Corps volunteer in Ottangadu, Tamil Nadu, India from June 1970 to June 1972, talks about the training program that converted a political science grad from Stanford University into an agricultural extension agent in rural India. He talks about the difficulty of learning the Tamil language and the formalities of dealing with the Indian government bureaucracy and village officials as he promoted hybrid varieties of rice and other modern agricultural techniques. He improvised, branching into poultry promotion, English tutoring, and even some soccer training at a local school.
