Interview with Katherine Anstett, October 31, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Katherine Anstett served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Romania, from 2002 through 2004, in the Youth in Development sector. Katherine first applied to Peace Corps in her mid 20’s, but did not receive timely communications, and eventually gave up on the idea. Toward the end of her career as a social worker, she decided to apply again. She was invited to serve in Romania, cohort 14. The group trained in Ploiești. Training included language, culture, and history. Katherine was assigned to Onești, working at a home for orphaned children, many with special needs. Her job included recruiting members of the community as volunteers, providing training in social work, and coordinating logistics and activities for volunteer groups from other countries. Katherine had the opportunity to travel with her counterpart to evaluate other institutions in Romania for UNICEF. She enjoyed the warm-hearted people, beauty of the country, and working with other volunteers. Katherine returned to her site several times after completing her service, and continues to be in contact with staff and former residents of the home.Interview Accession
