Interview with Dollye McClain, August 22, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Dollye McClain served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador from 1978-1981 in Home Community Service, where she worked with the Ministry of Agriculture educating women and children on projects like raising rabbits, beekeeping, sewing with patterns, and building solar showers. McClain was one of three Black volunteers out of 200 in her group. Training was in Quito, followed by an unsuccessful site placement in Pimampiro and a later successful one in Quininde, where McClain was able to interact with Afro-Ecuadorians living in the northwest coastal regions of Esmeraldas Province and Chota Valley. Transportation was by bus, bike, canoe, and horse. One of McClain’s successes was helping a boy get treatment for a facial skin condition, thereby making it possible for him to attend school. Following her service, McClain served as a Peace Corps recruiter. She credits Peace Corps with having a positive impact on her career as an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher and later as an administrator.Interview Accession
